\u00a0<\/span>That all sounds simple enough, right? But, then it comes time for you to actually recite that speech you prepared. Your nerves jump from your stomach to your throat, all of those things you were supposed to say fly right out of your brain, and you\u2019re left standing there slack-jawed, clammy-palmed, and shaky kneed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

D<\/span>on\u2019t worry, it\u2019s not just you\u2014we\u2019ve all been there. Crafting and then delivering the perfect elevator pitch might\u00a0sound<\/em>\u00a0easy. But in reality, it\u2019s anything but.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the past\u00a0eleven seasons, “Dragons Den Canada” winners have been showcasing their strategies for\u00a0achieving success. However, these tips and tricks don’t just work on TV \u2014 they can also help you accomplish your goals in real life. Michelle Romanow, star of Dragons Den Canada and\u00a0mentor<\/a>\u00a0at Aspire-Canada has been successful in business and investing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Fortunately for you, there are a few things you can do to instantly kick your spiel up a notch. Where should you begin? Start by staying far, far away from these six common mistakes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a01.\u00a0You\u2019re Not Offering Value<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>If there\u2019s only one thing you remember, make it this: Your elevator pitch should not only share\u00a0what<\/em>\u00a0you do, it should also explain\u00a0how well<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0why<\/em>\u00a0you do it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>You need to go beyond something matter of fact like, \u201cI\u2019m an accountant\u201d in order to adequately outline the value you bring to the table. So, with that in mind, something like, \u201cI\u2019m an accountant focused on helping small, independent businesses successfully manage their finances and maximize their income,\u201d holds much more impact. If you can site figures to show how much revenue and budgets you had under control then that’s even better. This is not just offering value – its demonstrating it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Dragons Den Canada episode with SnowPlow Express is a case in point\u00a0in not\u00a0offering value.\u00a0\u00a0This was\u00a0a high valuation business with zero sales.<\/p>\n

  1. You\u2019re Only Focused on the Past<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u00a0<\/span>Similarly to the point above, you shouldn\u2019t place all of your emphasis on the things you\u00a0have<\/em>\u00a0done\u2014you also need to leave some room to talk about the things you\u2019re\u00a0aiming<\/em>\u00a0to do.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/span>Yes, it\u2019s great to touch on those major things you\u2019ve already accomplished. However, you still need to make it a point to discuss some of your goals for the future as well. After all, the past will only get you so far.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/span>Rest assured that this doesn\u2019t need to be anything overly complex. Instead of of saying something like, \u201cI\u2019m a journalist focused mainly on fitness topics. I\u2019ve won several awards for my work,\u201d you would say, \u201cI\u2019m an award-winning fitness journalist. Moving forward, I\u2019m also aiming to broaden my niche to write about health and nutrition.\u201d<\/p>\n

    1. You\u2019re Fidgeting<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \u00a0<\/span>You could have the most perfectly polished elevator pitch that exists. But, if you recite the entire thing while shuffling your feet, biting your lip, tugging at the hem of your shirt, or maintaining steady eye contact with the floor, you probably aren\u2019t going to make the splash you\u2019re hoping for.<\/p>\n

      \u00a0<\/span>Fidgeting is distracting for your conversational partner, and only serves to make you look uneasy\u2014which, as a result, undermines your confidence. So, make your best effort to stand with your head high, your feet shoulder-width apart, and make gestures away from your body. Practice with a friend if you have to!<\/p>\n

      1. You\u2019re Over-Selling Yourself<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>Yes, the very purpose of an elevator pitch is to sell yourself and your skills. But, there\u2019s a fine line you need to walk here\u2014you don\u2019t want to overdo it.<\/p>\n

        For example, don\u2019t label yourself as a \u201csales expert\u201d if you have little to no sales experience under your belt. Or, don\u2019t credit yourself as an \u201cExcel whiz\u201d if you finally just figured out how to adjust the width of a column.<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>While you want your elevator pitch to summarize what an impressive professional you are, you also want (ahem,\u00a0need<\/em>) it to be honest. So, don\u2019t go overboard with those showy claims. Remember, this isn\u2019t an infomercial.<\/p>\n

        1. You\u2019re Rambling Incessantly<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \u00a0<\/span>Do you know why it\u2019s called an \u201celevator pitch\u201d? Way back when, sometimes a short elevator ride in the office was the only opportunity employees had to impress a higher-level executive.<\/p>\n

          \u00a0<\/span>What lesson can you take from that anecdote? Well, your elevator needs to be short\u2014in fact, it needs to be as concise and persuasive as you can make it.<\/p>\n

          Remember, the goal of your pitch isn\u2019t to share your entire career journey. Instead, it only needs to hit a few major highlights. Avoid rambling endlessly, and you\u2019ll actually manage to keep your conversational partner engaged in what you\u2019re saying.<\/span><\/p>\n

          The case of Caloric Responsibility on Dragons Den Canada illustrates the pitfalls of rambling incessantly.\u00a0 The Dragons asked no less than five or six times how they\u2019re going to make any money off of this dietitian\u2019s plan. Unfortunately,\u00a0the answer never came. Instead, pitcher Todd Schneider\u00a0engages in very technical\u00a0weight loss jargon that is of no interest to the Dragons.<\/p>\n

          1. You\u2019re Over-Rehearsing<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            \u00a0<\/span>There\u2019s a lot to be said for practicing your elevator pitch\u2014it can make you feel that much more confident when it\u2019s time to actually recite it. However, beware the trap of over-rehearsing.<\/p>\n

            \u00a0<\/span>When it comes time for you to actually share your spiel, you don\u2019t want to spit it out as fast as you can\u2014while barely taking any time to breathe\u2014and send the message that you\u2019re just trying to get through it as fast as humanly possible. That approach will backfire and only make you appear more nervous.<\/p>\n
