Attorney General Loretta Lynch, alongside other government officials, made the announcement while Swiss authorities arrested seven of the defendants\u00a0during FIFA\u2019s annual meeting\u00a0in Zurich.<\/p>\n<p>Officials arrested this morning are undergoing an investigation for allegedly accepting bribes totaling more than $150\u00a0million from U.S. and South American sports marketing executives over a 24-year span. According to the DOJ, the executives \u201csystemically paid and agreed to pay\u201d millions of dollars \u201cin bribes and kickbacks to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to international soccer tournaments.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The FIFA Officials and Executives Charged in the Scheme<\/h2>\n<p>Jeffrey Webb, FIFA vice president and CONCACAF president, has been charged in the FIFA scheme, as well a Jack Warner \u2014 Webb\u2019s predecessor as CONCACAF president \u2014 and Aaron Davidson\u00a0of Traffic Sports USA Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the indicted individuals \u2014\u00a0including Daryll Warner, former FIFA development officer and Jack Warner\u2019s son \u2014\u00a0already pleaded guilty. Some have even forfeited over millions of dollars.\u00a0Defendant Charles Blazer, former FIFA executive committee member, forked over more than $1.1 million, and\u00a0Jose Hawilla of Brazil-based Traffic Group also pleaded guilty and agreed to hand over more than $151 million.<\/p>\n<p>Current FIFA president Sepp Blatter is also under suspicion, although officials refused to comment on whether he is under investigation, according to the\u00a0<a title=\"New York Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/28\/sports\/soccer\/fifa-officials-arrested-on-corruption-charges-blatter-isnt-among-them.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendants fostered a culture of corruption and greed that created an uneven playing field for the biggest sport in the world,\u201d said FBI Director James Comey in an\u00a0<a title=\"issued statement\" href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/nine-fifa-officials-and-five-corporate-executives-indicted-racketeering-conspiracy-and\" target=\"_blank\">issued statement<\/a>. \u201cUndisclosed and illegal payments, kickbacks and bribes became a way of doing <a id=\"PXLINK_2_0_1\" class=\"pxInta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/fifa-bribery-corruption-scheme-affects-world-cup\/#\">business<\/a> at FIFA.\u00a0 I want to commend the investigators and prosecutors around the world who have pursued this case so diligently, for so many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Why Is the U.S. Involved in the FIFA Investigation?<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most confusing aspects of this investigation is the United States\u2019 involvement. As CNN reports, the U.S. government is investigating\u00a0because the scheme allegedly took place on American soil.\u00a0\u201cAccording to U.S. request, these crimes were agreed and prepared in the U.S., and payments were carried out via U.S. banks,\u201d the Swiss Office of Justice reportedly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/05\/27\/us\/fifa-corruption-investigation-why\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. networks also pay billions of dollars for the World Cup, making the country\u2019s television <a id=\"PXLINK_1_0_0\" class=\"pxInta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/fifa-bribery-corruption-scheme-affects-world-cup\/#\">market<\/a> the largest for the FIFA tournament.<\/p>\n<p>According to CNN, Lynch said the next step in the FIFA corruption investigation is extradition.<\/p>\n<h2>FIFA\u2019s Corruption Scheme Can Impact Future World Cups<\/h2>\n<p>USA Today reports the bribes were found to be connected to the 2010 host country selection.
