1. Take a tour of local restaurants.<\/h3>\n

Elle Martinez of\u00a0CoupleMoney.com<\/a>\u00a0said that she and her husband took a staycation to celebrate an anniversary.\u00a0\u201cOne of our favorite things to do when we travel is try hole-in-wall spots, so for this staycation we took the money we would\u2019ve used to travel and went on a restaurant tour,\u201d Martinez said. \u201cWe went on daily dates and knocked off our list of places we had been wanting to try.\u201d<\/p>\n

A staycation could also be the perfect excuse to plan a pub crawl of local bars, attend a wine tasting or a tour a local brewery. To keep your eating-out bill from getting too high, hit restaurants up during lunch, which is usually when the prices on the menu are cheaper. Also, take advantage of happy hour specials.<\/p>\n

2. Stay in a different part of town.<\/h3>\n

\u201cPick a hotel at least 30 minutes from your usual neighborhood so you have the opportunity to try new restaurants, shops and activities,\u201d advises\u00a0Jenny McIver of rtwin30days.com<\/a>.\u00a0McIver lives in suburban Atlanta and decided to spend a weekend at a hotel in Atlanta\u2019s midtown\/Buckhead area with her\u00a0fianc\u00e9.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0staycation in a different part of the city you rarely visit will get you outside your normal haunts. And, you can experience a new place without racking up travel costs.<\/p>\n

3. Get out of town.<\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re determined to get out of your city, find a destination that\u2019s not so far away that you have to book a flight. Caroline Trefler, senior editor at Fodors.com<\/a>, said her most memorable staycation started with a weekend out of town.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live in New York City, and I went camping upstate with friends (bonus points for being very inexpensive!),\u201d she said. \u201cWe were back in the city late Sunday night, and I spent the rest of the week based at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Book a hotel for one or two nights.<\/h3>\n

Rani Robinson, managing producer at TravelChannel.com<\/a>, said she booked a hotel to help her Fourth of July staycation in Washington, D.C., feel like a getaway. \u201cWe packed our bags and became complete tourists for 24 hours,\u201d she said. \u201cWe retired that night to a hotel in walking distance from Georgetown\u2019s Waterfront, to truly complete the staycation experience. The kids were completely thrilled to not have to return home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jamie Beckman, senior editor at Budget Travel<\/a>, took a staycation at the famous\u00a0Algonquin Hotel in New York City\u00a0away from her home in\u00a0Williamsburg, Brooklyn. \u201cIt was a treat for me because I\u2019m a huge fan of hotels with history behind them \u2014 especially those that were popular in the mid-20th century,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0\u201cThe Algonquin is not only one of the oldest hotels in New York City, but it has served as a writers\u2019 haven for the likes of Dorothy Parker, and\u00a0it\u2019s been featured prominently on my favorite TV show, \u2018Mad Men.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of spending a week or two at a far-off destination, a one-day or weekend-long staycation is much easier on your finances. See\u00a0if you can find a hotel that\u2019s\u00a0offering deals or discounts. 5. Spend time with friends and family.<\/h3>\n

One of the biggest perks of a staycation is that, unlike a typical vacation, you\u2019re not leaving friends behind. So, you can use your time off to make quality memories with the people you care about. In fact, perhaps the hotel you\u2019re staying in can make it easier \u2014 and maybe even cheaper \u2014 for you to host a gathering or party.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur last staycation we grabbed a hotel nearby with a big suite and invited out our niece and nephews for a pool and pizza party, which made their week,\u201d said\u00a0Kyle Stewart, travel editor at UPGRD.com<\/a> and owner of TripSherpa.us<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt was fun for us too \u2014 we got to host without having to clean up.\u201d<\/p>\n

6. Unplug the electronics.<\/h3>\n

Jeanette Pavini of Coupons.com<\/a> said that unplugging was key for her to enjoy her staycation. \u201cWe turned off the cell phones and shut off the computers \u2014 that\u2019s the trick!\u201d she said. \u201cIn two days we felt like we escaped and were completely refreshed.\u201d<\/p>\n

9. Talk to local experts to find affordable things to do.<\/h3>\n

To get ideas on new things to do in your area, ask around. Friends can be a great source of local knowledge, but so can experts. Pavini suggest visiting a local visitors\u2019 bureau for ideas and possible\u00a0discounts.<\/p>\n

Deacon Hayes of WellKeptWallet.com<\/a> goes straight to the real experts. \u201cThe best way to find out new things to do is to ask a concierge at a hotel in your own city,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are full of great ideas on how you can enjoy your staycation.\u201d<\/p>\n

10. Be a tourist in your city.<\/h3>\n

Jon Dulin of MoneySmartGuides.com<\/a> lives in Philadelphia, so when he and his family took a staycation, there were plenty of popular tourist attractions to explore that he found by searching online. \u201cThe great thing about the staycation was that we did things that we typically overlook even though they are in our own backyard, like the Liberty Bell,\u201d Dulin said. \u201cI\u2019ve lived here my whole life, and this was the first time I saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n

You can figure out what touristy activities you should do in your city by thinking \u201cabout the top things visitors do in your town, and go explore those that you\u2019ve never actually done yourself,\u201d said Jeffrey Ward of Savvy Navigator<\/a>. Living in New York City, Ward walked the High Line, saw a couple of Broadway shows and more during his staycation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe actually undertook\u00a0activities that we\u00a0rarely do ourselves but are constantly sending our friends and family out on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

11. Find deals on passes for local attractions.<\/h3>\n

Going on a staycation is a great way to spend more time at a local attraction, whether it\u2019s a museum, zoo, aquarium or theme park.<\/p>\n

Chana Schoenberger Zimmerman of MaxMyInterest.com<\/a> stayed in New York City during the end-of-year holidays for a staycation. \u201cWe took the opportunity to visit museums and interesting neighborhoods farther afield and to go to the theater and even the movies, which we rarely do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Special rates or passes can make these types of attractions more affordable, especially for locals who can visit throughout the year. \u201cOne of the best ways to discover new things to do in your own area is to think outside the city limits,\u201d said Rains. \u201cWithin a day\u2019s drive or bike ride of my home, for example, I can kayak on a river with a Class III rapids, go hiking on trails among ancient mountains, travel to an old-fashioned general store in a historic district and ride to vineyards that offer wine tastings and meals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many outdoor activities in and near your city are probably free or incredibly cheap. During your staycation, go hiking, biking, swimming, camping and more. You\u2019ll appreciate the nature and wildlife in your city.<\/p>\n

13. Plan your staycation around an event.<\/h3>\n

A staycation can be the perfect time to take\u00a0advantage\u00a0of events and entertainment happenings in your own city, such as a convention, festival or concert.\u00a0\u201cMy wife and I are based in Pittsburgh, and occasionally we get a hotel\u00a0and plan a weekend around an event, whether it is a concert or just a night out,\u201d said Stewart.<\/p>\n

Look ahead, find an event that\u2019s exciting to you, and plan around it. \u201cI\u00a0read local magazines, websites and local papers that have events and listings to keep on top of what\u2019s going and what\u2019s new,\u201d said Trefler.<\/p>\n

A staycation is a great time to treat yourself. Indulge in a spa day, have a massage or get a mani-pedi. The sites Raymond mentioned often feature big discounts on these services.<\/p>\n

15. Bring the vacation to your home.<\/h3>\n

Sheiresa Ngo of The Cheat Sheet<\/a> has a clever idea if you want to experience exotic destinations at home when you don\u2019t have the cash for a plane ticket and other travel costs. \u201cIf you decide to stay at home, try decorating your home to resemble the place you most want to visit,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can have a Hawaiian vacation right in your living room with a couple of faux palm trees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lisa Flowers, founder and\u00a0CEO of FlowersMediaMatters.com suggested setting a theme for your staycation to experience another culture at home.
