But careers are slightly more difficult to navigate than highways, and it\u2019s hard to know whether your job has you in the fast lane to a bright <a id=\"PXLINK_2_0_1\" class=\"pxInta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/7-signs-youre-dead-end-job\/#\">future<\/a> \u2014\u00a0or on the road to nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>To find out which direction you\u2019re heading, check for these seven common signs that indicate you\u2019re in a <a title=\"job tips\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/6-reasons-ditch-startup-real-job\/\" target=\"_blank\">dead-end job<\/a>. We asked career experts how to spot the signs, what they mean and what you can do to avoid being trapped.<\/p>\n<h2>Dead-End Sign No. 1: Your boss shows no interest in your career goals.<\/h2>\n<p>Like it or not, your boss has a lot to do with you achieving your career goals. So if he or she isn\u2019t even clear on what those goals are \u2014\u00a0and shows no signs of wanting to know \u2014\u00a0you could be staring down a big Dead-End Job sign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if you\u2019re the very best at your job, if your boss doesn\u2019t see it, you\u2019ll never move ahead,\u201d said\u00a0<a title=\"CopelandCoaching.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.copelandcoaching.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Angela Copeland<\/a>, a career coach and columnist with the Memphis Daily News.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you should do:<\/strong> If you\u2019ve made your career goals clear to your boss and you\u2019ve been with the company for more than a year but nothing has changed, it might be time to move on. \u201cIf you\u2019re set on staying with the same company, consider looking for a role in another department with a boss who will appreciate your strengths,\u201d said Copeland.<\/p>\n<h2>Dead-End Sign No. 2: When promotions come up, your company looks outside.<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ve had your eye on a higher-level position for some time. Finally, it opens up and you\u2019re sure you\u2019re next in line for the promotion. But then you get the memo: A new person with a similar resume to yours has been brought in for the job. That\u2019s not a good sign.<\/p>\n<p>If this happens regularly, it could be a red flag that <a id=\"PXLINK_1_0_0\" class=\"pxInta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/7-signs-youre-dead-end-job\/#\">management<\/a> subscribes to the philosophy of looking outside the company for \u201cnew blood\u201d with \u201cfresh ideas\u201d when it comes to opening positions. If so, that might mean there\u2019s little or no opportunity to get a promotion, said\u00a0Keisha Blair, co-founder of <a title=\"Aspire-Canada.com\" href=\"https:\/\/aspire-canada.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Aspire Canada<\/a>, which helps young people achieve successful<a id=\"PXLINK_5_0_4\" class=\"pxInta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/7-signs-youre-dead-end-job\/#\">careers<\/a> through mentorships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you should do:<\/strong> You could look for other companies that have similar policies and move up the same way the outsider who took your promotion did, said\u00a0Blair. Or, you could move laterally in your current company if another department has a better promote-from-within policy, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ask other employees in other departments what their experiences have been, however. There\u2019s no sense in leaving one dead-end position for another.<\/p>\n<h2>Dead-End Sign No. 3: You dread going to work every day.<\/h2>\n<p>Does the thought of going to work in the morning stir up emotions\u00a0usually associated with doing your taxes and receiving a death sentence? If so, that could be a sign you\u2019re in a dead-end job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan a red flag be waving any more frantically?\u201d asked\u00a0<a title=\"Carol Phillips\" href=\"http:\/\/healthdesignnh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Carol Phillips<\/a>, a national health and wellness expert and author of \u201c52 Simple Ways to Health.\u201d According to her, being burned-out, unchallenged or unmotivated will be obvious to management and could lock you out of any promotion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you should do:<\/strong> Make a list of all the things you hate about your job and put a check mark next to the ones you can change for the better. \u201cIf you lack the ability to change the ones that cause you the most stress, update <a id=\"PXLINK_6_0_5\" class=\"pxInta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/7-signs-youre-dead-end-job\/#\">your resume<\/a> and start chasing a job that sparks your passion,\u201d said Phillips. \u201cYour health will thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Read: <a title=\"10 best jobs for college dropouts\" href=\"https:\/\/aspire-canada.com\/20-rich-and-famous-community-college-graduates\/\" target=\"_blank\">10 High-Paying Jobs for College Dropouts<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Dead-End Sign No. 4: You are never offered projects that challenge you.<\/h2>\n<p>Unless you dig latrines for a living, you probably look forward to new, challenging projects that test your ingenuity and skill. But if every time a new or special project comes up and it goes to the cubicle\u00a0next to yours, it could mean you\u2019ll never get the chance to showcase your skills. That equals a dead-end job, said\u00a0Copeland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you aren\u2019t getting projects that challenge you, your skills won\u2019t continue to grow and develop,\u201d she said. Over time, that can create difficulty in finding a new job or moving up in the company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you should do:<\/strong> \u201cBefore you lose hope, approach your manager and offer to take on more challenging projects. Some managers may be waiting to see you take initiative,\u201d advised\u00a0Copeland. But if the trend continues, it might be time to <a title=\"tips to quit your job\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/5-signs-youre-financially-ready-quit-job\/\" target=\"_blank\">quit your job<\/a> and dust off that resume before it\u2019s\u00a0too late.<\/p>\n<h2>Dead-End Sign No. 5: Team members never consider your input valuable.<\/h2>\n<p>Many companies foster a team environment where you become part of a tight group that tackles important projects. It can feel like a company within the company, and your opinions and ideas should carry weight. But if you\u2019re feeling like an uninvited guest at a family wedding, it could be a sign your future isn\u2019t so blissful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeam dynamic is critical for your long-term success within a company,\u201d said\u00a0Copeland. If your team doesn\u2019t support you, acknowledge you or consider your ideas, it\u2019s unlikely that your managers will either.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you should do:<\/strong> First, try to improve your relationships with each team member, said\u00a0Copeland. \u201cBut if it becomes clear that you\u2019re not moving in the right direction, it might be time to move on,\u201d she said. Join another team\u00a0or <a title=\"reasons you are still unemployed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/personal-finance\/5-reasons-still-unemployed\/\" target=\"_blank\">search for another job<\/a>. Just make sure you \u201cfind a healthy environment that will support you and your career goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Dead-End Sign No. 6: A machine could do your job.<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019re not necessarily talking literally here. But if the tasks assigned to you are so mundane and below your education, training and skills\u00a0\u2014 you have an impressive degree but you\u2019re still head coffee maker and chief paper filer \u2014\u00a0it could be a sign that you\u2019re in the dead-end zone.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps your boss has no confidence in your skills or your ability to actually think on the job, said\u00a0Cheryl Rich Heisler, president of <a title=\"Lawternatives\" href=\"http:\/\/lawternatives.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lawternatives<\/a>, a Chicago-based career consulting firm. Creativity is a much-cherished asset in any upwardly mobile career, so if yours isn\u2019t being tapped, it could be a problem for your future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you should do:<\/strong> Try to come up with a new twist on the mundane tasks assigned to you.\u00a0\u201cDemonstrate how even the most rote job can be done better, faster and more efficiently. If you can prove yourself at even the most basic level, the boss may begin to give you other opportunities to showcase what you can actually do,\u201d said Heisler.<\/p>\n<h2>Dead-End Sign No. 7: Your industry is shrinking.<\/h2>\n<p>Years ago, the Yellow Pages industry was a popular one to work in, said\u00a0Copeland. Now, it\u2019s a survival challenge. If you suspect your industry could be on the endangered species list, it could mean you\u2019re heading down a dead end.<\/p>\n<p>But before taking any action, do your research to see where your company stands in the industry, suggested\u00a0<a title=\"Jean Erickson Walker\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jeanericksonwalker.com\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jean Erickson Walker<\/a>, a Portland, Ore.-based executive coach. There is always a place for an outstanding producer \u2014\u00a0even in a small industry \u2014\u00a0so first verify how bad your situation is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you should do:<\/strong> If you think your industry might be going the way of record stores and newspapers, take heart\u00a0\u2014\u00a0you have options. First, find out if your company is preparing for the changes it will have to make. If not, grow your skill set while you still have a paycheck. You can go back to school, attain certifications and network aggressively.
