With property costing about\u00a0$4,510 per square foot,\u00a0microflats have become a popular option in Hong Kong. One microflat \u2014 275 square feet\u00a0\u2014\u00a0on the outskirts of the city sold for $722,000 in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>High prices have kept many lower-income city residents from buying homes. As its population has climbed to around<span class=\"thread\">5.5 million<\/span>, the city&#8217;s cost of living has shot up, earning it the distinction of being named the most expensive city in the world of 2015 by the Economist Intelligence Unit, according to the BBC.\u00a0For $1 million, you can get a space of about 19 square feet.<\/p>\n<p>The good\u00a0news is that the city has enacted several housing measures in recent years to help keep the city affordable for lower-income households. Living in the city means paying some of the highest housing prices in the world, however.<\/p>\n<p>For $1 million, a home buyer can get a space<span class=\"thread\"> about half the size of an average hotel room\u00a0in the U.S<\/span>. Buying a condominium in Geneva costs 14.6 times the national average income, far above the costs of homes in other Swiss cities, according to a report from Swiss bank Credit Suisse. The median listing sales price in New York City is $1.2 million according to Trulia.<\/p>\n<p>New York City home prices have gone up 5.2 percent in the past year, according to Zillow, but the real estate site predicts that growth will slow to 1.1 percent in the coming year.
